Miss World 2013 Megan Young on Tuesday night received the ‘People of the Year 2013’ award for being the first Filipina to win the coveted blue crown in the pageant’s 62-year history.

“True to the pageant’s credo of ‘beauty with a purpose,’ Megan epitomizes both the physical and inner beauty of the Filipino, especially with her active participation in relief efforts, during the aftermath of typhoon Yolanda,” The Philippine Star columnist Joanne Rae M. Ramirez wrote last December. Philippine President Noynoy Aquino even described the actress-turned-beauty queen as an “inspiration to her generation”.

PeopleAsia bestows the award “to people who have stood out in the past year for their achievements, advocacies and attitude”. Other awardees include National Book Store founder Socorro “Nanay Coring” Ramos, veteran actress and singer Nora Aunor, singer Kuh Ledesma, film director Brillante Mendoza and actor Coco Martin.
