They were so close to winning in previous Bb Pilipinas editions, but Mary Jean Lastimosa (Binibini 25) and Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach (Binibini 8) ended up as runners-up. Now armed with more experience, the two are back to hopefully snatch the coveted titles.
Mary Jean Lastimosa: Third time’s a charm?
An engineer by profession, Mary Jean first joined in 2011 (she was under Aces & Queens) where she placed 2nd runner-up. A year after, she decided to join again and became an instant favorite for the crown. Hopes were high she would go home with a crown after winning special awards from major sponsors but surprisingly failed to make it to the Top 5. Pageant fans thought it was the end of the road for this 26 year-old Filipino-Arabian beauty. but she made a buzz late last year when she confirmed she will be joining Bb Pilipinas again. She’s now under Kagandahang Flores, the team behind the reigning Miss International.
What you need to know about MJ: Growing up in a war-torn province, she developed values of determination and courageousness, and this is something she brought to her personal life, her career and her journey to the Binibining Pilipinas crown. Binibining Pilipinas’ Maricar Balagtas is her inspiration for joining the pageant again, because she joined three times before winning. Whenever she feels down, she looks up at her and thinks that if she was able to do it and so can she.
Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach: Continuing the “golden” legacy
“Right after the (2013) pageant, I knew I was gonna come back,” said Pia in one of her previous interviews. She might be the only crownless girl last year after finishing first runner-up, but she received the same amount of training as the other ladies. Now that she has decided to join again, this definitely gives this Fil-German girl an advantage over the first-timers. She started modeling at age 11 and has appeared in several shows on ABS-CBN prior to joining Bb Pilipinas. This speaks a lot as to why she is very comfortable with the camera. With former Binibini runners-up ending up as titleholders in recent years (like Diane Necio in 2011 and Janine Tugonon in 2012), we might just see a crown on Pia’s head this time around.
What you need to know about Pia: As an actress and model, Pia was her family’s breadwinner, and she considers getting through taking care of her family as one of the best things that happened to her. “I was 11 when I stepped up to become a breadwinner through modeling and acting. Now I’m glad that they’re settled and finally okay. This experienced helped me mature a lot, and I don’t regret it,” Pia says.
