The article which I wrote for Rappler about the 40 Bb Pilipinas 2014 candidates is finally up. Please do find some time to read it. 🙂

Rundown: Bb Pilipinas 2014 top 40 candidates
By DREW FRANCISCO
MANILA, Philippines – 2013 was one for the books for Binibining Pilipinas. Bea Rose Santiago and Mutya Johanna Datul were crowned Miss International 2013 and Miss Supranational 2013, respectively. Ariella Arida finished 3rd runner-up in Miss Universe, while Joanna Cindy Miranda made it to the Top 10 of Miss Tourism Queen International.
The pressure is now on the next set of Bb Pilipinas queens to match their predecessors’ victories. It’s a tough act to follow, but the ladies, both newbies and returning, seem up to the challenge.
As we count down to the coronation night on March 30, read up on your favorite Binibinis…
In 2010 Venus Raj’s pilapil (rice paddies) walk rocked the Miss Universe stage. A year after, Shamcey Supsup made big waves with her tsunami walk. A year after that, Janine Tugonon placed 1st runner-up in the pageant with her deadly cobra walk. And just last year, the salagubang walk took Belarus by storm as Mutya Johanna Datul won for the Philippines the Miss Supranational crown. These are some of the living proofs that a polished and distinct pasarela could make-or-break a girl’s chances in beauty pageants.
After months — and even years to some — of duck walks, catwalk trainings and modelling sessions, the Binibining Pilipinas 2014 40 official candidates finally hit the Big Dome stage for the annual Fashion Show, clad in JAG’s summer collection.
It was a fierce event, and I was fortunate enough to have witnessed it in person. And after all the walks, turns and sultry poses, here are my list of this year’s Bb Pilipinas catwalk divas. (Photos from Bb Pilipinas)

The 40 official candidates last week hit the runway of Smart Araneta Coliseum for the annual Bb Pilipinas Fashion Show. The first show featured pieces from Jag Jeans and accessories from the Binibini collection. Who stole the spotlight? Who were the catwalk divas? Know more here.
Watch them below through the lens of Missosology’s Bong Tan:
I WAS fortunate enough to witness the Bb Pilipinas 2014 National Costume Competition, which was part of the annual Fashion Show held last night at the Big Dome. As we all wait for the announcement of the Best in National Costume, let me play judge and enumerate the best girls and National Costumes for me.
Here are my considerations for choosing these girls. First, the costume must strongly reflect Philippine culture. Second, how the girl presented and carried her costume. I’m really not into the flamboyant, over-the-top designs. As long as each detail shows coherence to the costume’s theme and that the girl was able to give justice to the costume through a solid presentation, then that is enough to say it is a good national costume. AS I TYPE this blog entry, my eyes are half-closed and my body is tired, but I don’t want to hit the sack without posting about tonight’s big event: the Bb Pilipinas 2014 Fashion Show.
My friend Larry and I got inside the Coliseum at exactly 7pm, the song “Hello” playing on the background. We were seated on the 5th row, facing the stage. In front of us was Jonas Gaffud of Aces & Queens. Just a few rows away was Madame Stella Marquez Araneta (she was seated in front with her amigas, holding a piece of paper and a pen).
The show started almost an hour after we went in. The ladies, divided into four groups, first walked the ramp wearing JAG’s summer collection.
Girls who made a good first impression were Julian Aurine Flores, Mary Ainjely Manalo, Pia Wurtzbach, Laura Lehmann, Parul Shah, MJ Lastimosa, Yvette Santiago and Ladylyn Riva. But my eyes were glued on these two ladies: Raquel Kabigting and Joy Marie Gangan.
After that segment, a band composed of teenage boys sang a medley of Beatles songs as everyone awaited for the second part of the show: the national costume competition.
At 9pm, the girls hit the runway one by one in their cultural costumes. I have some favorites (which I will be detailing in another blog entry) but the clear standouts are those worn by Kabigting, Ainjely Manalo, Lehman, Shah, Riva and Angelique de Leon.
But when it comes to presentation, Kimverlyn Suiza, Wurtzbach Lastimosa and Shah were the best.
The show ended with the reigning queens joining the 40 candidates and Venus Raj inviting everyone to watch the Bb Pilipinas 2014 Primer which will be aired March 23 on ABS-CBN’s Sunday’s Best. The winner of the Best in National Costume will be announced on the primer.
The Binibining Pilipinas National Costume Competition is more than a contest among candidates and their respective designers; it is a celebration of the Philippines heritage and culture.
This special award was removed years back from the pageant’s awards categories. In 2010, the organizers decided to reinstate it (as Philippine Terno competition) “to promote patriotism among the candidates and local designers”. The following year, it was renamed “National Costume Competition”.
2010 – Maria Venus Raj (Bb Pilipinas – Universe)

2011 – Elizabeth Clenci (Unplaced)

2012 – Nicole Schmitz (Bb Pilipinas – International)
Designed by Edwin Uy
2013 – Maria Teresita Alaine Baccay (Unplaced)
Designed by Abbog Ocampo
Which one is your favorite? Mine would be the Edwin Uy creation worn by Nicole. The intricate details were a sight to behold. While it looked sexy, it didn’t lack the elegance and beauty fit for a Filipina beauty queen.
Who do you think will win this special award this year? Find out in a few hours.
Here’s a preview of some of the Bb Pilipinas 2014 candidates’ cultural costumes that they will be showcasing at tomorrow’s National Costume competition. It is part of the annual Fashion Show to be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
BINIBINING Pilipinas promises “a fashion extravaganza like no other” as it gears up for this year’s Fashion Show at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on March 6, 7pm.
“All eyes are set on who will follow the fabulous footsteps of Shamcey’s Tsunami Walk, Janine’s Cobra Walk, Ariella’s Ariba Walk and Johanna’s Salagubang walk, and sashay their way into representing the Philippines in the world’s most prestigious beauty pageants.”
The girls will first sashay grace and elegance in their cultural dresses in the National Costume competition. After which, it’s gonna be a battle of fierce walks as they show off sexy JAG jeans and accessories from the Binibini collection.
This is the perfect time for us, pageant aficionados,to fan girl over our favored bets as the show is open to the public. Tickets are available through Ticketnet Online at P110 for Patron A, P90 for Patron B and P60 for Box.
